Welcome to the West York Area Middle School. Our school houses students in grades six through eight. Students benefit from curriculum guided by Pennsylvania State Standards that is delivered by highly qualified teachers and specialists in student-focused, learning environments.
The middle school faculty is dedicated to working with students to promote academic rigor. Our middle school philosophy of teaming provides students the opportunity to succeed in a supportive environment.
Middle school students spend most of their day engaged in core instruction with a grade level team of highly qualified, content teachers. Core instruction includes a full year of daily-extended instructional periods (approx. 75 minutes) in Math and English/Language Arts as well as a semester of daily-extended instruction in Social Studies and Science. English/Language Arts teachers and Social Studies/Science teachers share the same students, allowing these teachers to plan connected lessons and reinforce reading and writing skills. Team planning time allows all of our teachers to collaboratively design instruction and interventions to assist our students academically, socially, and behaviorally.
In addition to the core subjects, students participate in an exploratory curriculum including Wellness, Technology Education, Computer Education, Art, Music, Family and Consumer Science, Computer Design/Graphics, Healthy Decisions, and Choices. Courses in Spanish and German are offered in eighth grade. Exploratory courses allow students to discover additional avenues of interest.
All students also participate in a daily 30 minute intervention period called W.I.N. (What I Need). These 8-week long workshops provide remedial or enrichment in the areas of reading comprehension, math computation, problem solving, writing, research, and appropriate social engagement. Student data is used to prescriptively assign workshops.
At WYAMS, our students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities including music, athletics, student government, and a variety of other activities and clubs. The middle school also promotes character education by encouraging students and adults to be good people and to exhibit a positive attitude.
Our PTSO meets to plan and provide activities and resources for our students. We encourage all members of the community to join our PTSO in support of our student activities.
